• Hydrogen vs Liquid — which Shopify storefront should I pick?

  Hydrogen is worth it when you need custom UX that Liquid can't handle smoothly (product configurators, complex multi-step PDPs, real-time inventory from external systems, AI-powered search), or when you want a headless CMS for content, or when you need a B2B portal with role-based pricing. For most DTC stores under $5M/year, a well-built custom Liquid theme is faster to ship, easier to maintain, and just as fast. We'll recommend honestly in the discovery call.

• Does my existing Shopify admin still work with a Hydrogen storefront?

  Yes — Hydrogen pulls products, inventory, customers, and orders from the same Shopify backend you already use. Admin, payments, fulfillment, apps (Klaviyo, Yotpo, etc.), and reports stay exactly as they are. Hydrogen replaces only the visible storefront — checkout still runs on Shopify's hosted checkout (PCI-compliant by default).

• What's the ongoing cost of running a Shopify Hydrogen storefront?

  Oxygen hosting is included free in your Shopify plan — no extra hosting bill. You'll pay for any headless CMS you choose (Sanity is ~$99/mo at scale, Contentful starts around $300/mo for production), plus ongoing dev hours. Plan for $500–$2,000/month in maintenance once you have real traffic, mostly for content updates, feature additions, and dependency upgrades.

• Can I A/B test on a Hydrogen storefront?

  Yes — VWO, Optimizely, Convert, and Google Optimize replacements all work. Even better: server-side experiments via Hydrogen's loader pattern give you flicker-free splits with no third-party JS in the critical render path. We've shipped Hydrogen builds with both client-side (VWO) and server-side (homegrown) A/B testing depending on the use case.

• What happens to checkout in a Shopify Hydrogen storefront?

  We use Shopify's hosted checkout (or Checkout Extensibility if you're on Shopify Plus). Custom-built checkout isn't supported by Shopify outside of Plus, and PCI compliance for a self-hosted checkout would add 5+ months and significant ongoing cost. Hydrogen handles cart + redirect-to-checkout via Shopify's official cart API.
